Direct message exchange
Via the web service for direct message exchange, customers of Customs can send and receive messages via the Internet without using data communications operators. The web service can be applied to the following Customs data systems:
- the summary declaration system AREX
- the export system ELEX and
- EMCS (Excise Movement Control System)
Using the service requires registration. The application for authorisation to use direct message exchange is
available on the Finnish Customs website at

Direct Message Exchange
A checklist has been created to support the development of direct message exchange. The checklist contains examples of the most commonly occurring error situations.

Version 1.6 of the XML schemas will be moved into production on 11 June 2011
Version 1.6 of the direct message exchange XML schemas will be moved into production on 11 June 2011. Customers can start utilising the new functionality in production according to their own schedule after this date. At this time, the new functionality is already available in the customer testing environment.
Earlier released versions of the direct message exchange XML schemas continue to be supported. End of support for
earlier releases of the direct message exchange XML schemas will be announced separately, at least 6 months in advance
of the end date.
