Title of statistics

Import and export of goods according to products by activities (CPA), industries (NACE), and main use of goods (MIG)

Collector

Finnish National Board of Customs

Description

The structure of import and export is described at an approximate level according to products by activities (CPA), industries (NACE), and main use of goods (MIG).

Data content

Classifications based on products, industries, and uses of goods are regularly applied to describe the structure and development of all import and export without specifying any countries. The data, however, are compiled also according to the countries.

The structure and development of Finnish exportation can be monitored e.g. by the following five principal CPA product categories:
- wood and paper industry products (20-21)
- chemical industry products (23-25)
- metal, machine, and vehicle industry products (27-29,34-35)
- electro-technical industry products (30-33)
- other products

Import can be monitored according to the following main use categories:
- intermediate goods
- energy
- capital goods
- durable consumer goods
- non-durable consumer goods

Statistics complying with these classifications indicate the values only.

Data collecting method

Data on trade by Finland with other EU Member States are collected from statistical declarations lodged by enterprises through the Intrastat system of internal trade. The information on the trade between Finland and Third Countries is obtained from customs declarations, which shall be lodged on every import and export consignment. The data on internal and external trade are combined to form the statistics on the foreign trade of Finland.

Applied classifications

The CPA statistics indicate the structure of import and export by product categories according to activities (Classification of Products by Activities CPA).

The NACE statistics contain data according to industries (Nomenclature générale des Activités économiques dans les Communautés européennes NACE 2002).

The MIG statistics express import and export according to the main use of goods (Main Industrial Groupings MIG). This product classification is not official.

The CPA data are deduced from the CN (Combined Nomenclature CN), and the MIG categories from the CPA.

The country classification is based on the Commission Regulation (EC, 1833/2006) on the nomenclature of countries and territories for the external trade of the Community and the trade between the Member States. The country codes comply with those of the ISO/DIS 3166 standard of the International Organization for Standardization.
