Description
These statistics describe the price and quantity development of foreign trade of goods and changes therein.
Data content
These statistics indicate the monthly and cumulative indexes of unit values and volumes of foreign trade according to industries and use. Beside the index number, also the development of prices and quantities of foreign trade are analyzed in words and graphs.
Data collecting method
Data on the trade by Finland with other EU Member States are collected from the statistical declarations lodged by enterprises through the Intrastat system of internal trade. The information on the trade between Finland and Third Countries is obtained from customs declarations, which have to be lodged on every import and export consignment. The data on internal and external trade are combined to form the statistics on the foreign trade of Finland.
Applied classifications
The unit value and volume indexes of foreign trade are calculated and published according to the CPA product classification of the EU (Council Regulation, EC, of 20.10.1993, No. 3969/93), and according to the main use of goods (Main Industrial Groupings MIG). The MIG product classification is not official.

Completion or publication date
The unit value and volume indexes of foreign trade of goods are published within five weeks after the publication of the monthly statistics on foreign trade. The accurate publication timetable is defined for abt. one year ahead. The publication timetable is maintained on the Internet site of the National Board of Customs.
Time series
The unit value and volume indexes of foreign trade of goods complying with the present classifications are available since 1997.
Foreign trade indexes are being produced at the National Board of Customs since 1919. The older foreign trade indexes are available in print at the reading room of the Statistics Service or in the archives.
