Description
These statistics describe the total number of the means of transport crossing the border of Finland (vehicles, trailers, containers, railway carriages, and other means of transport).
Data content
These statistics specify the monthly total of the means of transport crossing the border of Finland. The means of transport are classified into passenger cars and delivery vans, buses, lorries and trailers as well as container transports (loaded and empty containers), and other means of transport. The statistics indicate the customs office of crossing the customs border. At the sea border, vehicles are recorded according to the countries of departure and destination, and at land borders according to the countries of registration. Containers are recorded according to the countries of departure and destination. The traffic statistics also comprise transit traffic. The statistics recorded at the western and northern land borders also contain regional cross-border traffic.
Data collecting method
The Finnish Maritime Administration collects information by the ports on the means of transport arriving by sea in Finland. The Customs Districts collect customs-office specific information on the means of transport crossing the land border. Data collected through various sources are combined at the Statistics Unit of the National Board of Customs.
Applied classifications
The classification of the means of transport is based on the classification applied by the Finnish Maritime Administration, which complies with the EEC/UN Recommendation No. 21. A corresponding classification is also the cargo type classification provided by the Council Directive 95/64/EC on statistical returns in respect of carriage of goods and passengers by sea.

The traffic statistics are produced monthly in an electronic form. The annual traffic statistics are published in vol. 2 of the Annual Publication on Foreign trade of goods. The publication timetable is maintained on the web site of the National Board of Customs.

Data exist since 1954.
