Description

Foreign Trade Statistics describe the transport tonnages at import in and export from Finland according to the modes of transport and goods categories as well as by countries of dispatch and destination.

Data content

These quarterly statistics indicate the tonnages at import in and export from Finland and the values of the consignments. The data have been classified by the modes of transport in accordance with the active vehicle used to transport the goods across the border. They have also been classified by the countries and goods categories. The statistical material even includes goods returned and those (to be) repaired. The transport statistics do not comprise transit transports.

Data collecting method

The data on the modes of transport are contained both in the data reported by enterprises in their statistical declarations at the EU internal trade and in those reported in their customs declarations at external trade. The data on internal and external trade, including those on the modes of transport, are combined to form the Foreign Trade Statistics of Finland.

Applied classifications

The compilation of statistics on commodities is based on the Standard International Trade Classification of the UN (SITC, Rev.4, ex 2007), and on the Commodity Classification for Transport Statistics in Europe (CSTE). The country classification is based on the Commission Regulation (EC, 1833/2006) on the nomenclature of countries and territories for the external trade of the Community and the internal trade between the Member States. The country codes comply with those of the ISO/DIS 3166 standard of the International Organization for Standardization.

Completion or publication date

The transport statistics are published quarterly, in electronic form. The quarterly data are published in the monthly foreign trade publication and the annual data in Vol. 2 of the annual foreign trade publication. An annual survey is published on transport statistics in June to August of the year succeeding the statistical year. The publication timetable is maintained on the Internet site of the National Board of Customs.

Data are being collected since 1965.
