Customs continues intensified controls on the western land border
Customs continues intensified controls in Tornio, Aavasaksa, Kolari and Pello. The controls were started on 22 September 2015. The increase of customs controls is linked with the intensified measures taken by other authorities such as the Police and the Border Guard. In addition to carrying out intensified customs controls, Customs provides administrative assistance to the Police and the Border Guard with regard to asylum seekers, when necessary.
During 22-27 September, more than 44 000 vehicles arrived in Finland through Tornio. Customs conducted intensified controls by questioning an estimated 26 000 drivers. Furthermore, Customs inspected about 230 vehicles, 190 of which were X-rayed. X-ray scans were used to ascertain if cargos contained concealed items or goods under prohibitions or restrictions.
